Main Gear to Get for Duck Hunting

Nowadays, duck hunting becomes the most popular type of hunting. It requires good patience and dedication. So, if you are new to this sport, you should learn some essential topic about it, which is the gear that you should bring. There are many duck hunting gear on the market, yet only a few are essential. Also, on hunting deals, you can get the best price. Now, let’s take a look at the essential gear for duck hunting in 2021.

Duck Hunting Gear

Shotgun

If you don’t already have one, buy one, keeping the following tips in mind. First, try to use a rifle that can handle steel ammunition. You can find rifle cartridges that use a nontoxic substance that behaves like lead and won’t damage the barrels of older rifles, but also, for flexibility, use a rifle that can handle steel shot. Then use a rifle with a more open choke, such as a modified choke, rather than a fully choked rifle. Otherwise, use your existing choke if you already have a rifle. In all scenarios, do the rifle routine to determine where your rifle sets its tightest layout. Then, place the rifle against one shoulder as if you were going to shoot it. Do this several times and pay attention to where you are looking and what the barrel is pointing at.

Nontoxic Shotshells

Duck Hunting Gear“When hunting waterfowl, use only nontoxic shot approved by the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service”. For starters, we recommend steel buckshot because of its lower price than regular and bismuth buckshot. Get used to steel buckshot because of its lower weight compared to straight buckshot. When choosing a shot cartridge, pay attention to the size and velocity of the shot. A great cartridge for duck hunting on decoys includes a shot size in #2 and a velocity of 1500 feet per minute. Once you have a few ducks in the bag, make changes to the shot cartridge size and continue with what works best for you personally.

Duck Decoys

The next item on the list is duck decoys. If price is a factor, look for a deal at your local sporting goods store. If that’s not an option, try a dozen teal decoys or follow up with a half-dozen mallard decoys. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to buy anchor weights, bait lines, and a bait bag, which adds to the baits’ cost. Worst case scenario, forgo the bait and focus more on passing opportunities. Either team up with a hunter friend who already has bait, or discuss the price of a dozen.

Waders

We highly recommend a pair of waders. Ducks like water, so try wading through the water to get to the ducks. When choosing a pair of waders, think about the area in which you plan to hunt. Hip waders work well for sand flats and shallow water, but they’re not the right choice if you’re looking for lakes that recent storms have inundated. Also consider the weather and temperature …
